Chapter 86 - The Monarch & Physician

Surgeon Gavin proceeds with his plan.  He gives his first patient a fake diagnosis saying that she has a mild version of the plague.
He pulls out his injection gun and injects a minor infection that has similar symptoms to the plague.  The villager believes that he is giving her a vaccination.
“Please come and see me if your symptoms do not improve,” he says knowing that this  patient will slowly begin to feel worst.
He repeats the procedure with the next patient…
…and the next…
…and a fourth patient for good measure.  With these four patients affected, he can now claim that this plague is spreading fast.
Now that he has set the wheels in motion, it is now time to take the driver’s seat and make sure that news of the fake epidemic spreads quickly.
Chalyela is at her scribe table working on a new peace treaty with Tredony.  If news of this affair does spread, she will feel much better if she knows that there is a peace treaty in place.
“Your majesty!  I have dire news!”  Gavin announces loudly for the benefit of those standing in the throne room.
Chalyela and Gavin stand in the center of the throne room, both ready to play their parts well in front of their audience.
“What is your news?” Chalyela asks attempting to make her voice sound very concerned.

“It is the plague!  It is back! “
“How can this happen!  I thought you found a cure to end this thing for good! How could the plague be back!” Chalyela shouts, finding that with her raging pregnancy hormones, pretending to be angry is coming far too easy.
“I am sorry to upset you.  I will re-evaluate the patients to make sure, but I am pretty sure that they have the plague.”
“Did you hear that?”  One of Ivan’s guards says in more of a statement than a question to  Buildmaster Krispin.  “The plague is back!”
“Oh!  How can this be?”  Chalyela says out loud, still playing her part.
Chalyela stands on her throne and makes an announcement.  “For the safety of myself and my unborn baby…I forbid anyone to come to court unless they have first been cleared of a plague diagnosis by Surgeon Gavin!”  Chalyela feels that this announcement makes the pretend threat that much more believable.
She then sits on her throne to reinforce her authority.
Gavin walks over to one of the patients that he injected earlier.  Although she claims to feel terrible, Gavin knows that her symptoms are not as bad as she believes them to be.  Gavin pretends to re-diagnose her.
“Oh no!”  he says lifting her arm.

“What?  What is it…it is the plague is it not?”  The patients asks concerned.
“I am so sorry, but you must leave court.  You have been infected with the plague!”  Gavin says in a voice that he is sure is heard by everyone around them.
Gavin, satisfied with his work there in the castle, leaves to find the other patients in order to give them the same false diagnosis.
Gavin locates another injected patient.
“I have been ordered by the queen to re-diagnose you!”  He announces.
“Yep, just what I thought!  Your symptoms have worsened.  You now have full blown plague!’
“Hurry!  Go home and tell your friends and family.  Tell them that they too, may be infected!”

Chapter 85 - The Monarch & Physician

With her pregnancy confirmed; knowing that she is in the best of health, Chalyela leaves the clinic and goes to find Ivan.
Now that she knows that Gavin is once again her friend, Chalyela feels complete and cannot wait to tell Ivan that they have a child on the way.
Jolene is reorganizing the archives when Gavin approaches her.  He knows that if he is going to help the queen with this plan, he will need his wife’s support.
Initially, Jolene is not very thrilled about the idea of deceiving the people of Archolia.  “I do not know if this is something that could be pulled off effectively,” she says voicing her reservations.
“It would not be very hard to convince them.  I could give a few people an injection of a minor easy to treat virus, tell them it is the plague and their imaginations would do the rest for us.”
He sees the doubt in her eyes. “I will not do this without your support.  Please believe that I could pull this off.”
“I have no doubt that you can, but I do not like the idea of you lying to your patients.  However, I know that it is for the greater good, so you have my full support!”
Gavin is grateful that Jolene believes in him.  He just prays that she does not lose respect for him as he does what he has to do.
Chalyela slowly makes her way across the kingdom.  She can already feel the weight of the baby weighing her down.
She just prays that Gavin’s plan works.  She cannot imagine what it would be like for her new baby to be born during a time of ill feelings between Archolia and Tredony.
Again, Ivan is in the forest clearing completing his patrol duty.  “What is it my love?”  He says when he sees her with a gloomy look on her face.
“I feel all plump around my middle,” she says with faux sadness in her voice.

Ivan looks down surprised at Chalyela’s full belly.
Unbelieving, he places his hand there.
“I cannot believe it!”  Ivan says.

“We did it!  We are having a baby,” Chalyela says as if Ivan has not already figured it out.
“You should be resting, not walking around trying to locate me,” Ivan says, suddenly very concerned for Chalyela’s health.
“I wish I could, but I still have to deal with this potential scandal.  Surgeon Gavin is helping me with a solution.”
Ivan is not very happy to hear that Chalyela went to Gavin instead of him, but he does not want to upset her.  “Oh…good,” Ivan says trying to sound at ease, but his voice reveals his displeasure.

Chalyela picks up on his change in tone.
“Are you not ok with him helping me?”

Ivan pushes his selfish feelings to the side, “I know that he has been your friend for a long time,  if he can help you end this scandal, than I am nothing but happy.”
“Well, while I was there, he said that I am in perfect health and that we should have a very healthy baby.”

Ivan finds this news to be a lot more pleasing.
“I am so happy to hear that my beautiful queen!”
Ivan and Chalyela kiss.
“Now please, go and rest.  I pray that this scandal blows over quickly.”

Chapter 84 - The Monarch & Physician

Surgeon Gavin stands in the middle of the waiting room researching symptoms.
Nurse Jolene rushes into the room.  “Oh Gavin!”  She says grabbing his hand with a large smile on her face.
“What is it my love?  What has put such a grand smile on your face?”
“I am with child!  I waited until I was sure.  I tested myself moments ago.”
Gavin is thrilled to hear the good news.  “Oh Jolene!  I am so happy! How are you feeling?”
“I feel fine Gavin.  I believe all is well.”
Gavin cannot remember the last time he has felt so happy.  He can feel tears pooling in his eyes but this time they are tears of joy.
Gavin insists on examining Jolene.  He checks her tongue.  Everything is fine.
He takes a look at her arm.  “I feel fine Gavin, really,” Jolene insists.

“Just making sure,” he responds.
“You are perfectly healthy!”  He announces.
“I told you,” Jolene answers, but her eyes are not on Gavin.  She is staring in surprise at Queen Chalyela standing behind him.
Gavin turns to face Chalyela and Jolene walks away, feeling confident that Gavin is finally over his relationship with the queen.  At least Jolene hopes that he is.
“Your majesty!”  Gavin greets her, unable to mask the surprise  in his voice.

“Greetings Surgeon Gavin. I pray that you could help me with an issue that could effect the whole kingdom.”
Gavin takes a moment to assess his feelings now that he is face to face with the queen once again.  Although he still cares deeply for her, he knows that his heart is with his wife.  “How may I be of service?”

“There is a huge scandal that if spread will threaten the well being of our relationship with Tredony.”  Chalyela begins before quietly telling him all about Kenna’s relationship with Lady Suzanne.
“So you need some news that would distract the citizens,” Gavin says showing his understanding of the situation.
“Yes!  Yes Gavin, that would work,” Chalyela says softly.  “If there is news of greater importance, everyone would focus on that!”
She continues. “Well, I do have some big news.  Knight Captain Ivan and I were married in a private ceremony and now I am expecting.  Is that news enough?”
“Ah!  Congratulations to you and your new husband!” Gavin says with genuine excitement.
“What a coincidence!  Jolene and I are expecting as well!” He adds.

“Oh! What great news Gavin!  Our children will grow up together!  Maybe they will be friends.”
“That would be great, but M’Lady…I do not believe that your news would be big enough of a distraction.  We need something bigger,” Gavin says in a contemplative voice.
“I think I have an idea.”

Chalyela is happy to hear this.
“I can only think of one thing that is big enough to scare the rumors right out of the mouths of the gossipers.”
Gavin lowers his voice so only the queen can hear him, “We are going to have to create a fake epidemic of the plague.”
“You are a genius …and you have always been a good friend. .. I am so sorry that I hurt you.”

“Do not fret, our relationship was ne’er meant to be,” Gavin answers. The two of them are uncomfortable.
Suddenly Gavin’s voice is all business, “Now I must examine our newly expecting queen.  Open your mouth please!’
“Looking good!  You seem to be in great health.  We should expect a very healthy royal baby.”
“Meet me in your throne room in an hour.  We have a big announcement that we need to make if this thing is going to go over well.”
“OK, but before I leave Gavin, please tell me that we can be friends once again.”
Chalyela continues, “I never intended to lose you as a friend, Gavin.  I could not bear it if I lost you for good.”
“You have never lost my friendship M’lady.  I will always be here for you.”

“Thank you Gavin.”
“Now you had better go if we are going to pull this thing off.”
Chalyela and Gavin spend a few moments staring; not knowing what to say to each other.  Although it was never meant for them to be involved romantically, they know that they will always have a space in their hearts for each other.
